AI startup AI21 Labs secures $155 million at a $1.4 billion valuation
Tel Aviv-based startup AI21 Labs has successfully raised $155 million in a Series C funding round, led by investors such as Walden Catalyst, Pitango, SCB10X, b2venture, Samsung Next, and co-founder Amnon Shashua. Google and Nvidia were also contributors. This funding round brings AI21 Labs’ total capital to $283 million and values the company at $1.4 billion.
AI21 Labs emerged from stealth mode in October 2020 with its pioneering AI writing tool, Wordtune. Since then, the company has experienced significant growth, doubling its workforce and planning further expansions.
Founded in 2017 by Shashua, Shoham, and Ori Goshen, the startup's flagship product is AI21 Studio, a developer platform for crafting custom text-based business applications using AI21’s advanced text-generating AI models, including the cutting-edge Jurassic-2 model. The company also offers Wordtune, a multilingual reading and writing AI assistant akin to Grammarly.

The release of Ernie bot signals a lenient AI policy from Beijing, highlighting a more relaxed stance.

As of now, Ernie bot can be accessed by CNBC without the previous requirement of a Chinese ID number.
